Great-grandson of Henry Johnson (1809-1874), a prosperous East Tennessee businessman who founded Johnson City, Tenn., known in its early years as "Johnson's Tank" and "Johnson's Depot." Johnson operated a local store, post office, boarding house, and railway depot in the area. He is also credited with inventing the H. Johnson thrashing [sic] machine.
